Le Mancenillier

vers/verse, pub:1829

From A Bibliography of Alexandre Dumas père by Frank Wild Reed:
     Twelve stanzas, of which Nos. 1, 2, 3, 6 and 12 are of five lines, rhyming a, b, a, a, b, or a, a, b, a, b ; Nos. 4,5,7,9,10 and II of six lines, rhyming a, a, b, c, c, b ; while No. 8 has only four lines, rhyming a, b, a, b.
Dedicated to Mme. Mélanie Waldor, it formed the fifth piece (pp. 47 to 52) in the MS. "Préludes Poétiques," with the following epigraph :—
"La . . . nul coeur ne viendra tromper un autre coeur,
Et le mien ose encore espérer le bonheur!"
                 Mme. Mélanie Waldor.
The text of the above MS., with six variations, was printed in "La Psyché" for 1829. During 1830 two annuals printed it : the "Almanach des Dames" and the "Almanach Dédié aux Dames."
In 1832 it appeared in the "Talisman," Paris, A. Levavasseur et T. Astoni, but so changed, that M. Glinel copied the whole in his MS. collection. It here contains fourteen stanzas : 1, 2, 3 and 6 of five lines, rhyming as before ; 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 of six lines, rhyming as in the other version; 8 again has only 4 lines, rhyming alternately ; while the final stanza is a repetition of the first.
In 1833 it again appeared in "Hommage aux Dames."
