La Méditeranée et ses côtes

divers/miscellaneous, pub:1834

From A Bibliography of Alexandre Dumas père by Frank Wild Reed:
As early as this year Dumas projected a tour of Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, Greece, Turkey and the Eastern Mediterranean, and he signed a prospectus for the attraction of subscribers to the work which was to result therefrom on the 10th October, 1834.
On the 23rd of March, 1835, MM. Amédée Jaubert, Alexandre de Laborde and Alphonse de Lamartine drew up for Dumas, at his request, an itinerary for this expedition. An English translation may be read in Mr. Garnett's "On Board the 'Emma.' "
In 1858 Dumas issued another prospectus with the same objective. This was also printed in his journal, "Le Monte Cristo," for April 22nd, 1858.
As is known, the cruise did not materialise until May, 1860, and even then it was speedily diverted to the Garibaldian adventure. (Refer to "Les Garibaldiens" under 1861.)
In the periodical "Les Annales" for August 1st, 1929 (p. 124), is a reproduction of the subscription form referred to above, which Dumas sent to Hugo, and which this latter had duly filled in; it bears the date "Paris, le 19 Mars, mil huit cent trente-cinq."
